The Alternative Models for Animal Research workshop is a one and a half day workshop, to be held at the Northwest Auditorium on the UCLA Campus in Westwood, CA.

The workshop is sponsored by UCLA and the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT).  CAAT has worked with scientists since 1981 to find new methods to replace the use of laboratory animals in experiments, reduce the number of animals tested, and refine necessary tests to eliminate pain and distress.

Background:  The regulations of the AWA require that investigators provide Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC) with documentation demonstrating that alternatives to procedures that may cause more than momentary pain or distress to the animals have been considered and that activities do not unnecessarily duplicate previous experiments. Though literature searches of alternatives meets this Federal mandate, the search for alternatives is increasingly turning to discussion among diverse groups leading to creative approaches to facilitate acceptance and implementation of alternatives*.

* An alternative is any procedure which results in the reduction in the numbers of animals used, refinement of techniques, or replacement of animals.

Objective: The objectives of the workshop are to provide:

  • An overview of world perspectives in animal alternatives;
  • A review of the alternatives concept;
  • Current breakthroughs in the use of alternatives;
  • Viewpoints on animal research from diverse groups;
  • Instruction and discussion on the use of existing information databases/networks.

Participants: This workshop is targeted for principal investigators, members of IACUCs, information providers, administrators of animal use programs, and veterinarians.

Media: Interested members of the Press should contact Phil Hampton at phampton@support.ucla.edu or (310) 206-1460. News media will be required to show valid press credentials prior to entrance.

NOTE: Registration is required prior to attendance to the workshop. Individuals who have not registered prior to January 21, 2008 will not be admitted to the workshop.
