IRB Support for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)
Funding Opportunities

The OPRS Human Research IRBs will assist researchers in meeting the tight deadlines set for responses to the federal government’s ARRA funding opportunities. The office strongly recommends you notify the IRB as soon as you find out you will receive ARRA funding so that the IRB can pre-assign your study to a committee for review, even though it has not yet been submitted, and thereby help facilitate the review and approval of your study.

As soon as you find out that you will receive ARRA funding,
  1. Link to the OPRS Human Research “Forms” page and
  2. Complete a copy of the brief “ARRA IRB Pre-Assignment Request Form.”
  3. E-mail this form (or the information that is contained therein) to one of the following Human Research Protection Program IRB Assistant Directors:*

  4. Use “IRB Pre-Assignment Request for ARRA” in the subject line.
  5. Attach this form when you submit your application so that the IRB can quickly identify your study.
You may also call Alison Orkin at (310) 206-3969 or Alisa Irwin at (310) 825-4849 or Sharon Friend at (310) 825-5855 if you have any questions.

Important Note: As mentioned in previous correspondence to the campus (see What’s New on the OPRS Human Research website), the IRBs can no longer issue “administrative” approvals. Therefore, if there is a possibility of funding via ARRA, it is important that you submit a completed IRB application as soon as possible. Please notify the IRB as described above as soon as you find out that the study is to be funded via ARRA.

* If you are not sure which type of study yours is, then e-mail to either or both of the people identified above and your request form will be handled appropriately.
